Overview: The twenty-fifth reading from the Torah and second reading from the book of Leviticus is called Tzav, which means “command.” The name comes from the first word of Leviticus 6:9 where the LORD says to Moses, “Command Aaron and his sons.” Tzav reiterates the five types of sacrifices introduced in the previous portion and discusses the priestly regulations pertaining to them. The last chapter of the reading describes the seven-day ordination of Aaron and his sons as they prepared to enter the holy priesthood.
HaShem instructs Moses on how priests should offer the korbanot. Burnt offerings remain on the altar all night. Grain offerings are presented with oil and frankincense, with a portion burned for HaShem and the rest consumed by the priests. Priests eat certain sin and guilt offerings in the holy place. HaShem, the priests, and the one bringing a peace offering each take part of it. To ordain Aaron and his sons, Moses consecrates them at the Mishkan for seven days.
